Writing about time management during the last eight weeks was very exciting for me. It helped a lot by focusing in very urgent matters. It happens that every time that I write about any topic, I become more than an expert because it forces me to practice what I write, just like walking my talk. After all, it is for just that little fact that I write this column. So, here I go with another subject: Innovation.
First of all, innovation is everything we do to create value, and it is because of it that we are where we are right now. If people and corporations do not innovate, we will all slowly die. Period! That is why we need to create new businesses, create new products and change old habits. But do not get too cocky, most new businesses fail, most new products do not work and most old habits remain. Last year, for instance, more than four thousands businesses started and more than five thousands failed, so you now got the point.
And they failed because their culture is the biggest deterrent to innovation. As a matter of fact, culture is most of the time the problem to everything. That is why Apple, a very intensive corporation, is not in the business of communication or internet search or anything else, but innovation. Apple takes complete control from the inside about what and where they want to be in the future. Actually, its engineers do very little invention; iPad has no real new technology, but applies the knowledge from somewhere else and makes the best out of it. The innovation in Apple is found in its culture that brings new products into the market. In Apple, they do not care or want its products to last more than two years; they update them every year! Their message is that you do not use an iPod, you wear them! Apple takes its ideas from the outside and makes their designs from the inside, not for reliability but for fashion. That is in their culture, and everything else follows that path.
The same happens in other successful corporations. Take, for instance, the case of Life Blends Inc., the company that I found in 2005 and that has won numerous nominations and prizes for innovation and sustainability. Our motto is to make natural juices with fresh fruits and vegetables, and no processing, chemicals or artificial materials. Our juices are not pausterized and contain no sugar or preservatives. Before 2005, there was no such a product in the market, and we are still alone! And that is because the culture in the beverage industry, in general, is more focused into profits and mass production than into health and well being. In Life Blends, we do not settle for cheap materials or questionable ingredients; our mission is to make the best juice in planet earth, and we are serious about it.
So, next time you think about innovation and the success of many innovative corporations, think first about what you want and where you want to be in one year or five years. And then realize that starting a new and successful business is essentially an experiment that takes time – a lot of time, and requires a very unique management approach and a culture that fits into the systems and structure. Yes, a culture that is different and follows no rule.
Next week I will address the subject of innovation but from another perspective, so keep tuned for more stuff.

via Lune VintageFrom time to time you may come across someone in the websphere + blogland + your social networking sites or even your inbox who has only hurtful or mean-spirited things to say. I call these people energy vampires or human black holes because they come out of nowhere + it seems all they want to do is suck the life out of you + damper all your beautiful positivity + loving kindness + blooming creativity + deserved success + that joyful smile of yours too. Reminds me a bit of those Dementors from the Harry Potter series, ya' know?
Now let me clarify, I'm talking pure negativity here folks, not constructive criticism + opposing opinions or challenging ideas, which I totally support + encourage. In this video I'm addressing straight up negative energy that's malicious + destructive + uncalled for!
So, now that we're clear on that, let me tell you exactly what I'm discussing on today's video:
1. The Cool Down Tactic.
2. The two proactive (not reactive) routes you can take to deal with negativity that you won't regret.
3. The importance of pre-establishing a strict policy about negativity in your life + biz, so you're never caught of guard!
Have you been been attacked or hurt by a negative vampire? What have you done about it? Let's open it up in the comments below to learn from each other in a loving + kind fashion!

I always recall the time when I used to work in the newspaper industry and had a meeting with the President of Panama. The interview was scheduled for 9am and I kept wandering what about if I turn out late to the meeting. As I thought it through, I became obsessed with the fact that there was no place for being late. And in the end, I arrived there at 7am. So here I go with the final piece of suggestions about Time Management:
1. There is no late. Period! If anyone comes late to one of my meetings, ask him why is he late and do not keep it as secret. I have found out that being late is the number one reason for wasting time.
2. I am not an e-mail fanatic. So, I only check on my e-mails once or twice a day. Period! I do not expect that you will answer my mails immediately, so do not even think I will yours.
3. I never make phone calls, only conference calls. I have people call me at a precise time… time in which I wait for the call so I can focus and think without interruptions. If, for some reason, the call comes late, tough luck!
4. I am aware of outgoing messages and I actually never check my mailbox. Remember, the idea is to get the monkeys off your back
5. I always call on standing meetings, or no meetings at all.
6. When I am in a meeting, I encourage the use of no electronic devices, unless the group agrees that they need them (by permission only!).
7. When I am invited to a meeting, if there is no written or advanced agenda, no meeting. Also, if there is no facilitator, no meeting. And that is why I urge the use of a time checker.
8. I always scheduled meetings in 10 minutes intervals, like 9:00am, 9:10am, 9:20am, …
9. I never use power points. In a meeting, it is a waste of time. The use of PP is like giving permission to the audience to fall asleep. Only use graphs, photos or chart.
10. Always apply the Alamo Theory. That means if there is something wrong, tell the truth! There are situations where we have to tell the truth. And it turns out that it is the best way to manage time: say the truth and waste not other people’s time.

To have a successful online creative business, you must have outstanding photos of your products.
Think about it. Your customers don’t get to pick up and hold the product, so you have to basically recreate that experience by taking great photos.
Many creative entrepreneurs complain that they can’t take good photos with the camera that they have, and that’s just bunch of bull. I used a simple point-and-shoot digital camera for years before recently upgrading, and I got compliments from multiple photographers on my pictures.
Before I had the money to spend on upgrading my camera equipment, I knew I had the option to take the best pictures possible with what I had. That meant I had to invest time in learning everything I could about my camera and different tips and techniques. You have that same option.
Now, before I go into the 7 ways you can improve your photography without buying new equipment, I just want to say that I’m not a professional photographer. So, I’m not going to give you any technical information—instead, I’m going to give you activities and tasks to do.
1. Read your camera manual.
It’s boring. I know. I just got a new camera, and it was painful to sit down and read through the manual. But, it’s vitally important that you know your camera. If you don’t know how to adjust the settings on your camera, you’re not utilizing your camera like you could be which means your pictures are probably suffering.
2. Spend the day playing with your camera.
An entire day taking pictures? Yep. That’s right. Photography is just like any other skill. The more you practice, the better you get. I suggest that you map out at least one day per month that you dedicate just to photography. If you set aside an entire day, then you’ll have more freedom to try different things and get creative.
3. Take the best photograph that you can for an item that starts with every letter of the alphabet.
For instance, you could take a picture of an apple for “A,” a button for “B” and a cat for “C.” This will increase your photography skills and get you away from photographing the same products over and over. And, it might help you think of new ideas on how you can photograph your products.
4. Get a photography book from your library and read one chapter each day before photographing your products.
This will give you new things to think about when you take your product photos, and it won’t cost you a thing.
5. Find new props for your photos.
A simple or complementary prop can make all the difference in creating lovely photos. Just remember that you don’t want to take away from your product or distract your customer with your props. You can find fun props at yard sales, flea markets, and thrift stores. Get creative.
6. Take 250 pictures of the same product.
Even professional photographers take tons of pictures to get just the right one.
Photograph the same product at different angles, with different backgrounds, and with different props. Adjust your camera settings as you go. You’ll definitely come away with some great photos—and you’ll be able to take what you learn and apply it to other products.
7. Read the free articles in the Etsy Seller Handbook on product photography.
As you read these free articles, jot down 10 things that you can implement to improve your photos and then do one each day for the next 10 days. Don’t just read these articles without practicing the stuff you learn, because you’ll be a lot more likely to remember it if you practice.

Lately I've been feeling really down + not like my typical cheery self.
A few days ago, I discovered I made I really big mess + I just can't seem to get the guilt + sadness off my heart. It's eating me inside, to say the least. Do you know that feeling? I was going to pretend everything was alright around here to keep up with the empowering creative hearts theme, but hiding my emotions is not really my forte, so I'll stick to being me + hope it doesn't scare you away.
That being said, I'm not about to turn this post into a whining dark cloud. I'm actually here because I know there is much to be learned from what is happening to me.
Heartache + failure + mistakes are often words that make me crumbled into a fetal position. Can you relate? But just because they make me feel uncomfortable + insecure + sick to my stomach doesn't mean I should lock them in a closet + pretend they don't exist. I really do believe that my success is directly linked to my ability to deal with the punches. So today's post is a celebration of adversity + how you can use it to learn + grow + become better!
life is messy
For starters, let me admit that life is very very messy. So often we get caught up in the perfection that we see - the success stories all around us + the gorgeous studio shots in decor8 + the Ready Made magazine features that our competitors get + the book deals others land + so on. Awards + recognitions + pretty pictures + oh my! We are bombarded with awesomeness + dreamy land + assume that there isn't any mess.
Lesson: We don't get to see what other people are experiencing, only what they are showing us. Don't be fooled by the perfection in display for you to digest. Instead, feel comforted by the fact that we all have struggles + ugliness + sadness + messiness in our lives, even if we don't show it!
you're not alone
I admit it: I have a superwomen complex. But the truth of the matter is: I actually don't have any extraterrestrial super powers. Just don't quote me on that one please, my ego might not be able to handle it. Anyhow, accepting your limitations is one of the biggest attributes you can learn in life. It will liberate you from the paralysis that perfection causes + will make you happier.
Lesson: Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice. By humble + know when too much is too much. Hire an intern if your are juggling too many things at once. Approach an expert if you need help with a particular topic. Contact a fellow artist if you need an honest review on a particular craft show. Also know when it's your turn to give back + help your community. You're not alone.
all you need is love
The road to greatness is not for the weak of heart. In order to survive you'll need to surrounded yourself with unconditional love + support. I've been extremely fortunate to have a loving family + boyfriend + friends around me to take care of me even when I didn't even know I needed to be taken care of. My grandma, for example, is like my Fairy God Mother, she always figures out a way to help me feel special no matter what. David's also such a huge supporter. He's the world's best listener. If I didn't have him to vent out + to confide in, I would most certainly be lost on this planet. I could go on forever, but you get the picture. I couldn't have gone this far without having loving people around me.
Lesson: Surround yourself with loving + positive + inspiring people. They will be your fortress when you are weak + your cheerleaders when your triumph.
grab some warm fuzzies
Staying afloat in the midst of a storm is hard. You feel like crap, but this is no time for playing small + shrinking + whining or panic attacks. Instead, you need a sturdy life vest + a darn good life boat + some warm fuzzies to keep your chin up + your soul uplifted. This weekend for example, instead of drowning myself in tears + staying in my pajamas, which is really what I felt like doing:
- I took up my mom's offer to go to Miami + to see The National Spanish Ballet. There's just something about flamenco that makes all my sorrows melt away.
- I took this cute little bunny with me everywhere. He keeps me such good company + makes me feel so darn special. I named him Ricket III Carles, just in case you're curious + you can see him in action here.
- I signed up for the Art of Action course + purchased a strategic coaching session with the one + only Tara Gentile -she has been such a huge mentor for me in this journey + I know with her help I can grab tons of momentum.
- I watched this cute video non stop because it makes me laugh every time. This girl is just too funny + there's something about her overachieving essence + frustration for perfection that reminds me of me when I was 5. A huge thanks to my girl April from Blacksburg Belle for the tip. By the way + completely off topic, are you signed up to April's newsletter? Well, you should! It's filled with awesome resources that are sure to ignite your spark + boost your inner superstar.
- I read my testimonials + customer feedback to remind myself that I'm not a complete loser.
Lesson: Each time a tsunami strikes go get your warm + fuzzy help kit. Not only will it help you build up your confidence, but it’s a tangible instrument to take out when you feel like, um, you suck.
learn to say i'm sorry
We’ve all been there. We’ve all messed up + as a result we've hurt someone we deeply care about. When you screw up learn to say I'm sorry, like you mean it. Don't make half ass apologies to cultivate your ego. Don't make crap excuses for your lame actions, it will only add salt to the wound.
Lesson: A sincere apology can go a long way towards making things right. When you speak from the heart + without pride miraculous little things can happened. That being said, don't rush the process. Real forgiveness takes time + space. Just learn to accept the journey + wait patiently for your time.
what now?
If you got down this far, I want to thank you for hearing me out + giving me a space to vent + be vulnerable + accept myself, just the way I am.
This is actually all I've got for now folks. Still much reflecting to be done + so so so much more to learn. So expect a follow up soon with more insights + confessions.
Now, before I wrap up, I would love hear your stories of wisdom. What do you do when your heart aches? How do you cope with failure? How do you handle mistakes? Lay it all out in the comments please.

Remember last time we closed with a reference to the article in the HBR from 1974, Who’s Got the Monkey? You will not believe it but every time I read this piece I learn new things. Have you read it already? I strongly suggest you brief through it; besides, it is free and available on line from Google.
This week, for instance, I came out with three new ideas that I can share with you, ideas that everybody needs to put in practice, especially when people haze and bring loose the monkeys into the office, house or life:
1. Tell them immediately not to ask stupid questions.
2. Tell them right off the bat that your job is not for sale, and you have important duties and obligations to do as well.
3. Tell them that meetings in your office are very, very short, and that they are not allowed to sit.
And the end, what really matters is that you get rid of the monkeys and get control of your space and time by eliminating subordinate imposed time. These last three advices will increase your leverage and enable to add value to your life. Is not it what we are supposed to do everyday? So, get rid of them all!

Life is messy + that's OK. I'm all for accepting change + embracing uncertainly + discovering new possibilities + seeking roads less traveled. That's what makes life so rich + magical. But this messiness also becomes our kryptonite, our Achilles heal. Let me explain.
From working with friends + talking to peers + as an artist + creative business entrepreneur myself, I've noticed that the main reason why people fail is not because they are stupid + incapable or inadequate. Far from it. I've actually discovered that the reason why people don't reach their goals + dreams is because they don't plan for success. Good intentions don't pay the bills + win you contests or get you on Oprah. Actions do honey!
Here's the thing, it's not enough to dream big + imagine what it would be like to be successful. In order to do great things + be the best in the world + be indispensable + spread your big idea + rock your thing, you've got to scheme + plan the road ahead + act accordingly. Winging it is overrated + extremely unsustainable over time!
That's why I've designed these printable Life Is Messy Planners. Made from scratch + based on the actual work habits of the creative folks I work with + talk to (artists + crafters + designers + bloggers + freelancers + creative business owners), these planners are meant to help you pin point your big ideas + write down your objectives + conceptualize your humongous projects + decipher your tasks + transform them into action.

these planners help you
- see the big picture + think about the higher purpose of your business.
- remain present about the future that you're building.
- break big ideas down + think about what it looks like to make those ideas real.
- be self aware enough to be the protagonist + prompter + performer of your life.
- diminish procrastination + maximize productivity.
- brainstorm your creative ideas.
- organize your finances (at last).

What!!! Is this already our sixth contribution to the subject of time management? I can not believe it. Time definitely flies fast, and that is why we need to be aware of this fact.
Like in any other subject, time is such a broad concept that can be approached from different ways. Like in Physics, Newton’s Laws explains the mechanics that every action brings a reaction, and Thermodynamics states that energy is not created but transformed. In Economics, for instance, it is said that when the supply meets the demand, the price is equilibrium. Well, with Time Management happens the same: in order to obtain a well balanced day, we need to eliminate wasteful activities and create new tasks.
eliminating waste
So, how can we eliminate waste from our busy schedules, things that are unimportant?
1. First, last time we covered the concept of benign neglect or doing nothing, which means that you are entitled to say no anytime it is necessary.
2. Second, we all have to be aware of bullet lists, those lists that are written by very important and busy people but eventually end up messing up part or all of our time.
3. And third, keep in mind the fallacy of ranking priorities, because they always change with time.
So, my advice is that you always need to have a reactive strategy in order to eliminate unimportant things from your schedule.
adding new tasks
And with respect to the other side of the equation, there are times in where you need to add to your schedule.
1. First, there are those tasks that are urgent today and must be addressed immediately. They are often called OBEs, overtaken by events, things that are urgent today but in the future will not be important.
2. Second, there is the knock-on effect, or the tasks that should be more important in the list. It happens that sometimes, there are certain things that appear unworthy but after a thoroughly analysis, they are considered more important.
3. And finally, there are those things that are in the back of your mind and are “hanging” because someone put them there: bosses, peers and even employees. Well, because you have your own things now, you must send them back to the original owners. Actually, this is the conclusion of an article in the Harvard Business Review, Who’s Got the Monkey?, written in 1974 by William Oncken and Donald Wass, that after all these years it is the second most copied article in the history of the HBR and I strongly recommend it.
Again, every action brings a reaction and every time you have to eliminate and add tasks from and to your schedule. Never forget about it!

I just realized...
today is my quitsaversary!!!
Yeap! One year ago, I called it quits. Said, good-bye to my traditionally successful + highly lucrative + “grown up” approved job to take me seriously + fulfill my passion full time + build the creative empire I always dreamed of.
365 days later, I'm happy to report that I'm doing pretty good. So good in fact that I want to scream from the top of my lungs: IT'S HAPPENING. IT'S ALL HAPPENING. IT'S REALLY POSSIBLE. I'M DOING IT. But you know what’s even more amazing? YOU CAN DO IT TOO. AND BETTER!
Sorry, was that a little too loud? I do notice I get really excited when I talk about this. But then again, I'm not really apologizing for my effervescence. I’m talking about some freaking life changing stuff here!
So be alerted, this might get louder.
Another disclaimer, before I continue: this post is in fact not a post at all. It's disguised as such to bring with it a more important message. This article is actually a pledge for action + a call to duty to reach out to you + say: I NEED YOU!
I need you to DO IT! I need you to move away from whatever it is that's making you feel crappy + sick + depressed or utterly uninspired + I need you to go do what makes your heart sing + your hands clap + your feet stomp.
Abundance is possible, not just for some of us, but for all of us. I've seen it happen to myself + I've seen happen to my clients + I've seen it happen to my peers. All the abundance in the galaxy is there, waiting for you too, BUT only if you can imagine it + embrace it!
You may ask yourself, who am I to be brilliant + gorgeous + talented + fabulous + successful? Who am I to be a creative genius or a superstar blogger? Actually, who are you not to be?
Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing cool about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. There's nothing enlightened at all about downsizing your awesomeness so that you will feel safe. We’re all meant to shine. We were born to make manifest the light that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
Don't waste time trying to prolong it, but rather build something meaningful, something you truly care about.
Don't waste your days trying to fit in for the sake of acceptance, but rather embrace being you. Everything else is boring. Everyone else is taken.
Don't waste a second of your life diluting your emotions to avoid feeling pain + suffering + heartbreak, but rather embrace feeling alive. It will be your only reminder that you are in fact alive + it will give you the strength + determination you need to find contentment + pursue happiness always.
Don't hold on to safety blankets or compartmentalized comfort spaces, but rather take risks + imagine better.
Don't be afraid to shine your light to the world. By allowing yourself to be brilliant + talented + fabulous you unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As you liberate yourself from your own fears + monsters inside your closet, you automatically release others from their mental prisons... simply by choosing to exercise your magic.
If I could do it, so can you. And better!
I expect great things from you, so keep me posted!
xo,
Mayi Carles
