How to Expand your Product Line?

I know you have BIG plans for 2012.

I'm not even exaggerating. Just take a look at what my twitter family's been scheming:

But, like I've said many times before. Good intentions don't pay the bills or get you that brand new cupcake recipe book you have your heart set on. Action do!

That's why in the spirit of getting massive things done + growing your game, I'm going to share with you one tangible way you can make a big income jumps this year + beyond - through expanding + innovating your existing product line.

Now, if you're like most creative entrepreneurs I know, you probably struggle to some degree with information overload + get distracted fairly easy with shiny objects. I know the feeling. That's why this week's episode is designed to give you 4 tangible ways you can come up with a pool of awesome products that you're proud of + will fly off the shelves.

tip recap

1. Talk to customers, not fans.

2. Spy on your perceived competitors.

3. Go outside your radar.

4. Look at your current stock.

your turn

What action steps are you taking to grow your line of products + shape up those future best sellers?

You know the drill. Share your insights down below.

Yay!

your videos always put a smile on my face, Mayi! I've done an inventory of my current products and have decided I need to add products for men as well. Brainstorming on what all to consider offering. :)

First off, I must say how I loved your little musical intro! We must be on the same wavelength Mayi, because this morning I was thinking about my brooches which I have just put in my newly updated etsy shop, and had the brainwave to make little bags for them to go in from some yards of vintage lace I have had stashed for ages! Buy a brooch and get a lovely lace bag for it at the same time!

    Keep up the great video's

What a sweet kiss at the end!

Love these tips Mayi. When you actually put these tips into action, you get so many great ideas.

I know I get lots of good ideas when I talk to my customers, so that's one of my go-to actions when I'm thinking about new services and programs. In fact, that's how I decided on putting together my course, RoadMap. I didn't think of it on my own--my customers asked me for it.

La Alicia: Seeing you here always puts a smile on MY face :)

Adding products for men is a great idea for expanding your current stock. Often times we limit our product ideas to our current customer avatar + forget to also broader our fan reach.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Michelle: While I would love to tell you that I'm actually a mind reader, I'm afraid I haven't yet completely mastered those wizardry skills LOL.

Anyhoo... your brooches are adorable. Just make sure to include a picture of the lovely lace bag to make the offer too irresistible to pass :)

Oooo. Shiny objects! Great ideas, Mayi. I've been thinking about ideas for expanding my product line or moving into some mediums that I enjoy and look forward to implementing them in the coming months!

April: Absolutelyyyyyyy my friend! It's not just asking for feedback but actually delivering. In the future I'm sure your customers would go out of their way to give you ideas + share with you their struggles because they know you deliver.

I also though of a 5th tip now that your name popped up in the comments + is: to attend live events. I know I got a ton of ideas from just going to RHH LIVE + networking with oh so inspiring women entrepreneurs + also from meeting you in person + strenghtening our friendship. I think networking events are bound to create more than a few million dollar ideas :)

Excellent tips! Your advice and insight is always a great motivator :) I've had ideas to expand my product line, yet absolutely no time to plan & do the work. So, I've decided at the end of the month, I will take a 3-4 week hiatus & close my shops to GET'ER done!! Thank you Mayi!

No one has mentioned the declutter aspect so far, so I'm going to assume the universe conspired to aim the little gem right at me to keep me on the long and challenging "get rid of clutter" path! And love the look on your face after the kiss! I love seeing people who are in love. :-)

Tracy: OMG Tracy for starters - I LOVEEEEEEE your brand. So so cute. You make the most adorable creations ever! Congratulations.

Second, I think taking a break to revamp is much needed once in a while. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hey Michele: How did you know I conspired with the Universe? LOL. This week I cleaned out my bookshelve + it felt so good. Really it isn't that bad once you schedule it + make it happen. Let me know how it goes :)

    Awww..love the ending ;)

These were great tips. I've been thinking pretty hard about how to revamp my shop and finding out what I'm lacking and what needs to go. Asking customers vs. fans is a great idea. I used to ask fans and not get much of a response, but when I ask customers it's totally different.

All these great videos are getting me super excited to get started on making this year an amazing fresh start for my company. Thanks!

Tabassum: Great to see your as always by dearest! I'm a softy when it comes to my fans, but I learned to be a little picky when it comes to feedback. Fans don't always buy what they say they would. It's just the way the game works.

I'm so so happy these week's tips got your creative juices flowing. Thanks again for watching + sharing your thoughts :)

I love these tips Mayi, they are SOLID. It is hard to make that distinction between FANS and CUSTOMERS sometimes! For me, I'm bringing in test groups! For my first program I have ten ideal customers working through it right now so that I'm POSITIVE I'm creating something that really serves them.

Love to see your smiling face....always makes me smile as well! And your tips, ideas are always right on. I am a procrasatinator by nature (hate it but I am a realist), moving, changing and implementating the "outside of the box" thinking is the thing that slows me down. 2012 will be the year of overcoming it all!

Mayi, I am hooked on your videos! Today's video really confirmed what I need to do, that is, to find a product that complimnents my speaking engagements. Look out! Therese from Belize is ready to get the ball rolling, tired of just plain old speaking....time to expand the product line!

Thank you for these invaluable tips, Mayi. Have a scopostetic weekend.

OMG Mayi! You are definitely a mind reader! Well, the reader of my mind for sure! I've been thinking a lot lately about ways that could help me expand my product line and be more appealing to a wider group of people. I've been thinking about simpler ideas, yet cute and more affordable.
Your video couldn't come in a better time! Thank you so much for all these great ideas.
The number one I've been thinking was the declutter part. I have a serious decluttering and rearrangement to do on my shop and craft room. Lots of junk that has to get out of the way so that "the good (and creative) energy will flow freely again" (great Feng Sue advice) ;-)

    Hi Mayi!!!!!:)
This year I want to do something more specific for my business. The first step for me is, as you say, talk to potential customers, not the fans. First I open a shop on etsy, I am gathering the material and can not wait to start!
Thanks for the passion you put into your work and your videos, it arrives intact here in Italy, on the other side of the world!:)))

Mayiii!! I've been MIA for a while, shame on me! so I wanted to drop by and "catch up".

I'm super duper happy for you, lovely wedding and you look so happy and glowing! wait a sec.. glowing.. ah ha! -kidding!-

I've been selling my little crafts at a shop in Amsterdam so creating stock keeps me crazy busy (and I still have my over full-time job), but the idea of expanding my product line with something easy to make that I'm proud of has been in my mind for a long time.

Today I'm happy to say that I just finished all my greeting card illustrations (Valentine's day / anniversary / love), they still need to be printed in recycled paper, but I'm almost there! :)

Keep it up with all your awesomeness!

p.s. Cute headband! reminds me of Rainbow brite

    Great stuff Mayi!
I am wondering what to do with my "old stock". I have tons of hats for children that I want to get rid of, or I should say, sell off, but even though they are discounted, I can't seem to get rid of them! I hope someone can give me an idea!
