Guest Post: Does Your Creative Business Have a Higher Purpose?

Your business needs to have a higher purpose behind it. It needs to be something your customers can talk about and share with others.

And, before you ask, I don’t mean God when I say higher purpose. Even though, that’s one way to have a higher purpose behind your business.

your big message or big idea

Every business should have a big message or big idea behind it, according to Laura Roeder and John Jantsch—two amazing marketers. Your big idea is what drives your business. It’s the backbone of each product you make and every service that you provide.

My big idea is that artists and other creative entrepreneurs can make loads of money doing what they love to do. They don’t have to be broke and miserable. I’m pretty sure that Mayi shares the same idea with her creative business coaching. That’s why we work so well together.

Mayi also has a big idea to make lovely products out of recycled, sustainable, eco-friendly materials. Her customers look at her Etsy shop, and within minutes, realize her big idea. It’s right in front of them. When a customer wears one of her adorable headbands, I can guarantee that other people are going to ask about it, because they’re that freakin’ cute. And the customer can say, “I bought it from a handmade shop on Etsy. The creator uses all eco-friendly materials.” I don’t know about you, but that would make me want to go look at her shop.

Can you tell me what your big idea is in less than two minutes? If you can’t then you need to refine it. If you can, do your customers know what your big idea is or do they have to hunt through your website to find it?

the story behind your products + services

Along with your big idea, you should share the story behind your products and services. What made you start your creative business? What lights a fire in you? Your customers want to know this stuff.

They want to know that you started making organic dog treats for your golden retriever, because she got sick from store-bought dog treats. And, then you decided that other people might want homemade, organic dog treats for their pets, so you started a business to sell your dog treats to other concerned dog lovers.

Also, tell specific stories behind different products and services. For instance, my mother-in-law recently made a fiber art bracelet with a recycled button from a dress that brings back a lot of memories from her 20s. That’s a great story. It’s short and easy to share.

Take 5 minutes to look through your product and service descriptions. Do they include stories? If not, mark a time in your calendar to add them.

let your passion lead the way

Building and running a creative business is hard work. It can be extremely rewarding, fun, and exhilarating—but it can also include lots of long hours, stuff that you don’t enjoy doing, and tough moments.

If you build a business that isn’t based on your passion, you probably won’t have a big idea or stories behind your products and services. Also, you’ll probably get burnt out really fast.

If you’re struggling to come up with your big idea or big message, is it due to a lack of passion? If it is, take a deep breath and know that there’s always time for change. And, there are plenty of people like Mayi who can help you redefine your business.

I love making and selling things, but I've never before considered my bigger picture. It makes so much sense, and I respond favorably to it in others, but just never made that leap to self-apply! Thanks so much for enlightening me!

Thanks so much for the article! The whole "bigger picture" is exactly what caused me to open my shop, AltaredVintage.

I've operated a few Etsy shops over the years for handmade items but just never had the passion to keep them up, and never had a purpose (other than my fabulous designs lol!) for buyers to keep coming back.

But I've had a higher calling (the God-kind) to open a shop and give half of my profits to ministry and charity efforts.

It's amazing how much having this purpose behind my store fuels me to keep up the momentum. As a buyer, shops with such missions or bigger pictures are more attractive to me as well!

Whether it's saving the environment, rescuing homeless puppies, or doing the work of God, a store with a mission is a store likely to succeed!

I totally agree with the concept and idea...not only do I believe it I preach it and share it in my book I wrote to help others "When You are the Boss...To Whom Do You Call Sick"? and the entire concept behind all that I do is "Socioeconomic" I am out to prove that you can make a difference and a profit at the same time. My daily battle cry is to: Motivate and Inspire the world to make a difference and pass it on! So for now I focus on the Cheesecakes and Desserts, however it's just a small part of the big picture.

A great article. Being a lapidary artist, every different stone I cut is an opportunity to tell a different story. I use really beautiful and unusual materials in my work, from kyanite from Tanzania to woolly mammoth ivory to recycled bowling balls. Just like every picture tells a story, so too does every handmade item. Objects have lives they are witness to things.

Thanks for this article! There is so much soul-less stuff floating around in the world these days, that handmade products, especially those with a story and a purpose (as you discuss here) are experiencing a renaissance. People want the personal connection and want to know they're contributing to something wholesome. I'll be thinking more about the stories behind some of my items and trying to add more details about all of that in the days ahead. Thanks again!

Great article! I feel so lucky to even have a passion and an artful mind. I think people really need to dig down and find out what lights their fire. I love peace, quiet time, meditation, and I think my pieces show a little bit of that. After reading this though, it makes me want to think a little deeper about it and what I can create from that. Thank you.

Thank you for writing this post. My clothing line, Mountains of the Moon, has focused on sustainable materials and fair, local labor since we started 10 years ago. With all of the challenges that have come with the recession, it's been our 'bigger purpose' that has allowed us to keep going. I also love what you wrote about the importance of a story behind each product that you sell. In addition to making your products interesting to buyers, without a story, the fun of creating is diminished!

    Wonderful post.

My health and peace of mind is my higher purpose. I have always lost my little self in my art while connecting with the Self. The more I do with my hands and the more I tap into my creativeness.......the better I feel. I have a serious heart issue and focusing on my artwork is healing. Really. Now maybe the real purpose is that the love which heals me also comes out in my work. Just maybe. We all want to experience joy.

I am a musician, storyteller and artist. I've been creating/upcycling & trash to treasuring since I was a little girl. Mom & dad were entirely my inspiration. Some inspiration was out of pure necessity and some out of creativity. My father tinkered with everything, never threw away and re-did, re-worked, and refurbished all things old & worn. My mother didn't consider herself a creative but made due with what we had which ultimately inspired the necessity creative in me. I don't feel the need to buy new materials. I do feel the need to use old - always have from the time I began to build my doll furniture from throw away packaging as a girl. Thanks for inspiring me to express my story. Will be updating my Etsy shop to share my the same. YES - true inspiration always comes from a higher place.

This is a concept that has more than come into its own today. Social marketing caught fire at least 15 years ago, and today consumers see it as more than just marketing -- it's essential to the well being of our society. For my business, Foundry Design, the higher purpose is found in my credo, "Beauty in What We Have." It's about seeing the value in things we already own, and choosing to own new things, such as the sweaters I make, that cleverly use recycled materials in new ways. Thank you for the post!

Reading this made me realize that I do have a "bigger idea", that is I do try to recycle, upcycle items to paint on, and that I paint on just about everything and anything. Also I put so much emotion and energy into my paintings so that it comes thru each piece I do. I decided to start my shop after my husband died, so I could share my passion with nature and support myself without having to go find a 9-5 job, since I haven't worked in over 18 years.

My big idea doesn't feel nearly so politically correct as eco-stuff; I just believe jewelry needs to be comfortable and customizable to be something that will be worn often. People haven't bought from me because of my stories so far ... they seem to buy because I ask about theirs, and then listen. How in the world do I translate THAT to an Etsy shop?

But I was getting to dread walking into my studio and greeting my sewing machine. And it was difficult to leave something that I got alot of attention for! But I did it! And now I'm back to loving what I'm doing.

Thanks for the inspiring post! I was sitting here mulling over what my "big purpose" is and I had a lightning bolt to the brain! I realized I've been dancing around it but not coming out and saying it to anyone, not even to myself :) I was feeling like my big purpose was a complex mess of crazy and then it came to me in two words. Two words that are the cornerstone of everything my business/art is/may become: Authenticity and Color.

Now all that's left is to shout it to the rooftops and live it to the core. No problem :D Anyway, thanks, this was really helpful for me!!
