Great Things Come to Those Who Wait: The Power of Delayed Gratification

TGIFVT - Thank God It's Friday Video Time!

Phew! I literally wait all week for today.

OK, so before we roll up our sleeves, I wanted to share with you something funny that happened early in the week. I received this e-mail from a reader asking me how I was able to come across like I was having a blast in front of the camera. The answer is pretty simple + requires no acting classes - it's called "actually having fun" - the for realz type.

I really am having this much fun making these videos for you. So much so, that on the day's I'm filming I can skip my Pilates DVD's, cuz my ab workout is taken care of with my self-induced hyena laughter.

But to be quite honest, not everything I do is fun + games. And that's actually a good thing.

In today's episode, I'm talking about the power of delayed gratification - the behavioral attribute that differentiates dreamers from doers + talkers from makers + wishers from world-changers; and the research to support it.

Hit play to get the full scoop.

And before you go, please gimme your feedback in the comments below for the cherry on top of the Red Velvet cupcake.

See you in comment land.

xo,

Mayi Carles

PS: If you have a friend + loved one + client + colleague + pet who could really benefit from watching this video, please help me spread the word. Huge virtual Panda hug in advance for your support.

There always are loads of things I should do but somehow they just hover around. And when I finally get down to them I feel relieved and ALWAYS think - 'why the hell I have not done them right away?!'. Getting ready for doing takes sometimes more time that actually doing the thing.

Hope that boost I feel now will stay with me till the next FVT and the next kick in the butt you'll give me :)

And now, let's back to work! Illustrations are waiting ^^

I don't always take the time to comment.. busy doin' ya know ;)
But I had to take the time to tell you this is your BEST VIDEO SO FAR!! Loved it!! Especially starting out it is easy to look around and see how awesome everyone else is but if you are willing to put in the insane amount of actual WORK you'll get there too and then some.. Thanks Mayi :)

What a great fvt! I think it is so easy to get caught up in everyone's success that it's hard to see that everyone started somewhere. It's hard to imagine that all the successful people we admire were once beginners in their industry. It's easy to not even think about all the hard work people put in everyday to achieve their goals.
Patience is definitely a virtue! Thanks Mayi! Always great inspiration in your lovely blog. xo!

Mayi, you're so right! Starting things up isn't easy and to do the things we love we sure have to do many things we would rather be able to pass on by... But the thing is, the more you think about it, the less you want to do it and the more you'll get annoyed at it. But once you put your hands on it and just do it, it all becomes simpler and much easier and bearable than you though... And then you can't stop, because you know in the end you'll get your prize! (whatever that might be...)
But sometimes you need the right boost to go and do it. Sometimes the sense of sudden urgency on doing it because you really need to take it out of the way to achieve a certain goal that just became approachable is the perfect energy booster! Or a kick in the butt like yours...

I had a break from my workout (I'm training hard to climb Everes, you know) and I enjoyed your energyvideo (always two or three times to understand it better:/) ... I agree, one of the best videos :) REALLY THANK YOU MAYI, I think that this is a key element°°

Hey Mayi, the more I watch the more I feel like we're friends.

My favorite part of this week's video is the part where you say that you have to Deserve your reward. I absolutely agree! The sweetest successes don't come easily, they're hard won and long sought.

Thanks for the great reminder. I hope you're having a fantastic Friday!

Adelaida: I know EXACTLY what you mean! The tasks that we usually postpone are the hardest ones, BUT also the most transcendental for your business, so when they are accomplish you feel like a champion :)

I'm cheering for you till next Friday :)

Heather: YAYYYYYYYYYY. I'm so so happy you raised your hand today. I loved to know your here + that you loved this. I'm really pushing myself more than usual to make these videos better than EVER, so your comment means the WORLD!

Alicia: GO Life is Messy, GO Life is Messy, GOOOO! ;)

Citlalli: Being stuck in the lure of perfectionism. OH MAN! I've SOOO been there too. The good news is that you've spotted it + you know it's destructive.

Linda: HAHAHAHA hipness. You sneaky you! :) But brilliantly clever :)

Cathy: Something a kick in the pants it's all we needs you're right. BUT sometimes, when cheerleaders are not around, we need to hustle + push through + give ourself a HIP HIP HOORAY self-cheer. The good thing about finishing BIG projects is that they make us feel like champs at the end… so often times just finishing them is the BIGGEST reward of them all :)

This is an awesome video Mayi and just what I needed to hear today. So funny too, because I just resolved to eat less startch and no sugars so that I can feel awesome when I take my professional photos later this month... I opted for an apple as a snack rather than a muffin. I'll be sure to watch this video again! xo

ih ih, I've always been the kid who waits for the second marshmallow! And I came from a family where no one resists having the first marshmallow right away, a disgrace! :P
It's hard but definitely compensates in the end.
For a moment there I thought you were going to talk about tantric, ih ih ih, that would’ve been fun too.

Thanks for the reminder that although the road is long, the reward is great. I'm going to think of the creation of my business as Mt. Everest from now on, to keep it in perspective. I'm never sorry I take the time to watch your videos!

I'm just now getting to this video & I'm sooo glad I went back & watched it. It's definitely for me. I'm not the most disciplined person & it's something that I want to get better at. I guess it just takes choosing one thing & then taking that first step. Thanks for the inspiration today Mayi!
