I was one of those kids that took my Crayola box everywhere I went. My mom even tells this story of how I drew my first crayon scribble before I learned how to talk. I'm not exactly sure of the verity of that tale, but it sure makes me feel special, but only when my mom tells it!
Anyhoo, as an avid Crayola-ler, I have more than a spare share of boxes running around the house, filled with every color imaginable. And like most creatives, big or small, I usually get a bit discouraged by ugly looking old crayon + their horrid broken tips. Reason why I had to whip out this DIY Recycling Crayons tutorial during my last TV segment at Tu Mañana.
Super easy + so much fun to make, this DIY is a fantastic crafty project idea that parents + teachers + crafty folks out there can use to say good bye to broken crayons + hello to brand new beautiful looking ones in no time.
materials
For this project you'll need:
- crayons (old or new)
- silicon molds (I used a number mold, but you can use any shape)
- exacto knife
- pirex
step by step
After you've gathered your materials...
Step 1: Preheat oven to 250°F
Step 2: Peel all paper from crayons.
Step 3: With the exacto knife, break the crayons down to smaller pieces so they can fit in the pan.
Step 4: Fill pan spots with the broken crayons pieces. Mine are one color each, but you can play around with this for wackier outcomes.
Step 5: Put your tray inside a pirex before putting inside the oven. Believe me, you don't want to be cleaning your crayons spilled stove later.
Step 6: Bake for 10-15 minutes making sure not to over bake the crayons, specially if you're mixing many colors together. These will melt together + it will look nasty. Been there, done that.
Step 6: Let crayons cool + solidify for a couple of minutes + then put into the freezer for 30 minutes or until they've harden.
Step 7: When their firm, pop them out of the mold, like you would an ice cube.
Step 8: Listo! Bring out your inner Picasso + start the crayon bonanza!

- Please use silicon molds. Plastic melts when you bake it. Not pretty.
- Crayons are just like candle wax, when they melt, they're hot. And I mean REALLY hot. So, please, when taking your crayons out of the stove use protective oven mittens for safety.
